I'm Ivan Furlanis, a railway/tramway/trolleybus enthusiast from Italy. As next moth I'll go in Romania for two weeks I'm searching informations about local tramways and trolleybuses; some days ago I found this forum and now I'm posting for the first time. Sorry if I write in English but I don't speak Romanian.

In Wikipedia I found this summary of Romanian tramway system at this address:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_town_tramway_systems_in_Europe#Romania

I would like to know if it is correct or there are other news (I hope not sad like the recent closure of Brasov tramway!).

By the way, if you have questions about Italian trams and trolleys I'll be glad to help you to find an answer. And, if You want to see some of my rail pictures, you can visit my website at http://grandunion.fotopic.net/.

Yes, the list is correct. The system in Constanta is about to close soon (probably in 2-3 months) but you'll still find it in good shape if you go there in the following month.

To help with your planning, here's a list of systems based on the number of lines (track segments):

One line: Cluj, Craiova, Resita, Sibiu.
Two lines: Botosani, Constanta, Ploiesti.
Three lines: Braila, Oradea.
Complex systems: Arad, Bucharest, Galati, Iasi, Timisoara.

Please note that above 'line' means physical section of track and not line number; for example the systems in Cluj and Craiova, which are basically single lines crossing the cities from East to West, each have 3 different line numbers running on different parts of the track.

For most of the above cities you can find system maps (including all the other transportation modes, like buses and trolleybuses) by clicking on the 'Harti' (maps) link on the page header.

Based on my personal tastes, the systems in Arad, Braila, Iasi and Sibiu are the most scenic; also the ones in Arad, Braila, Craiova and Sibiu have lines which leave the city and go into the neighbouring villages.

You can find here: http://ratb.stfp.net/?stat&la=I (in Italian) or http://ratb.stfp.net/?stat&la=E (in English) approximate statistics with the fleets and tram types of each operator; this also can give you an idea on the size of the tram operations in each city.

Thank you for your reply. By the way, i have known your site since years, it is very interesting also to see where are now old vehicles of some western transit companies. It's sad to know that Constanța tramways are going to die. Unluckily, I'll be in Baia Mare, exactly at the other end of Romania; as I'll be there with my girlfriend (she's from Baia Mare), I must ask her if she wants to go to Constanța just to photograph some old trams Wink .
