Alicante is familiar for most tram- and narrowgaugefriends, given that it is the metergauge track to Dénia which are the backbone of Alicante tram system. What once was a narrow gauge local rural line with diesel railcars, is now a modern tramway. Meter gauge but modern. Last time I was in Alicante, we toke a ride on the 500-meter-long tramway built new from the narrowgauge station in Alicante down to the playa. Today, the small pioneer line is abandoned, actually only since last day in June. But the rest of the system is built up as modern tramway. Late August will se the opening of line L2, and is is built a long tunnel with double track to replace the single track into Alicante. Soon even opened a station at Alicante's main train station (Renfe) who has just now received the AVE train (standard gauge). Line 4L go out to a fairly new suburb of Playa San Juan. Very functional with a large loop in the grassy embankment in the main boulevard that runs in a circle in the area. It's nice to see how in many countries on the continent build up of tram tracks in residential areas is done in a very nice way. Worth a visit then.

Alicante is a very pleasant town, plenty to see and do even for the non tram or Railway interest people. And the weather is mostly better than at home in Sweden. The foundations of the tramway is the meter gauge coastal railway which opened in 1914. The first 500-meter long light rail at the playa has now been demolished and become bike- and walkway. But otherwise it has expanded each after and later was the line 2 to Sant Vicent, which was inaugurated. I took a trip with the cart full line out and walked back to the center. Recommended. The track is a good example of how the tramway could be built as part of urban renewal. Below are some pictures from the line.
