Hello friends!

My name is Viktor Chaushev and I am vice-chairman of "Public transport
and infrastructure" NGO from Sofia, Bulgaria.
I want to share with you this information:
http://bgtransport.org/?action=news&info=629aeb373e7bd3db0a6ae5f89d77d1c4

We have recently started a campain for preserving 3 historical trolleybuses for moving museum exponates in Sofia, Bulgaria. One of them is Romanian-Bulgarian DAC-Chavdar 317 ETR from Pernik (Bulgaria). I need help from your forum and NGO to spread these news and to see if someone can help us.
It can be helped three ways:
- by spreading this news to other people, organisations and companies;
- by sharing technical documentation for DAC-Chavdar - we need service manual, diagrams, schemes, history of this model of trolleybus - everything you have and know;
- by donating in our campain. We use Paypal also.

Feel free to ask any questions!

THere are some brochures floating around the web with the 317ETr

There were two prototypes before they were shipped to Bulgaria. I have suspisions that the first was built in Romania with some Chavdar people since two models were displayed at the TIB fair. They were nearly identical on the outside with just cooling vents placed in different spots.

I do have some scans with the brochures. (I consider myself a bit of a Dac/TV/Rocar historian) so PM me and I can email you what I have.

I have been in the process of documenting every single model within this series of busses made by TV (Tudor Vladimirescu) and I wasnt excluding the Chavdar versions.

As a siden note, Chavdar used 112UDM chassis from Dac to build buses as well, both solo and articulated.

Hi,
Among Bulgarian transport fans are spread the nowhere proved "memories" about a DAC (entirely Romanian one) articulated prototype in Sofia streets around 1984-1986. According to these rumors, the trolleybus was in white color.
In the brochure that was published in this forum http://tramclub.org/viewtopic.php?p=80720#80720 the presented trolleybus 317 ET has the colours of the Bulgarian model. Although it bears only the DAC sign in front (without Chavdar) and the model is ET, not ETr. Besides in the brochure is written in Russian that the model was being (at the moment of printing the brochure) in process of final technical approval. So, can these two vehicles be the two prototypes you are talking about? BTW on the back of the brochure in the right bottom there is a kind of a code 019-88 - is it possible that 88 means the year 1988. And if so isn't it strange that there is a prototype after the beginning of the serial production of DAC-Chavdars 317ETr in 1986? Maybe there were some different modifications within the DAC-Chavdar 317ETr model?

There are odities with the brochure. I was going by what I know from first hand accounts.

There was a prototype displayed in 86 which did have the Dac Chavdar logo on the grill, as well as the 317ETr. It was rumored to be a 100% Romanian built vehicle but that is not surprising given the era and communism which blurred lines in such a way. The articulation steering and articulation itself was an Ikarus adaptation (well known fact, also proven in court, as much as I love Dac buses)

However, there was a completely 100% Romanian version of the 317ET. It only had Dac on the grill, as well as only 317E (despite 317ET being shown on the display case). This one had electronics, and a chopper for an AC current engine, made by IMEB Bucharest. The circuit board may have been of foreign origin, and there is little info about it.

The 317E/ET/Etr are basically a refined 217E which was initially built under contract for Kiev starting in 1980 with deliveries in 81. Prototypes were built, then changed many times over. In fact the first 317ET may have been a "two birds with one stone" type model. So in the end Im not sure if the first and only 317ET made it to Bulgaria or didnt end up in Timisoara (Romania). Timisoara received many export 217E and 317E that failed export requirements, not just from Bulgaria, but from the Bogota lot as well.

Going back tot he two prototypes. The first Chavdar (prototype more in the line of it being the first, before series production) was identical, and only those with info in Bulgaria could tell us which serial number it was.

The other one, Dac 317ET has differences in electronics and other electric components, shown by the cooling vents placed on the various access panels. Dac did have a tendency to change models around, as far as placement of such equipment, depending on factors like suppliers,shortages, deadlines etc. However given that the components on this particular model didnt exist on any other Dac produc, its not the case of using "something that was laying around" the vents were made with this prototype in mind.

There are photos that show these diferences but I dont have the rights to post them, however they do appear through a google search of "317ET"

Hope this helps.

(Daca vrea cineva, pot posta si traducerea, dar a fost un post cam luing. Discutam diferenta intre capul de serie 317ETr si prototipul romanesc 317ET, fara colaborare Chavdar)

Something I recalled. There were a bunch of trolleybuses sent to Bulgaria from Boston, the GM 53 series (Fishbowls). I saw photos of what looked like 50 or so, some in very good condition.

Whatever happened to them? I know its unrelated to the Chavdar, but it would be really interesting to know if one of those would end up in a future museum.

The only other time an articulated Dac was side by side with a GM Fishbowl was when the US spec Dac 117UD was sent as a demo in NY (MSBA Staten Island)

The shipment of the GMCs took place in 2009 by ship form Canada to Burgas, but the buyer (an operator from Plovdiv) didn't pay the taxes for the customs and the trolleys were nationalized and sold for scrapping to a dealer in the town of Yambol. But trolley №152 is still alive and is one of the three trolleybuses ( along with the Dac-Chavdar and a Skoda 9Tr) that the NGO, which launched the campagn for preserving the Dac-Chavdar, is now triyng to buy with donations from transport fans and support from the institutions with the idea to restore them for the future public transport museum.
You can see a picture of it on the NGO's site through the link provided in the post by viktorlc above.
