Citat: | Next Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn we will discuss what New York can learn from other cities for its streetcar project, the Brooklyn-Queens Connector (BQX) together with the Deputy Mayor of New York City and transport experts. It is an honor to be invited by the Regional Plan Association and I expect an exciting discussion.
New York City abandoned its massive streetcar network in the 40s and 50s as streetcar companies were purchased and lines were wiped out by the automotive industry (General Motors, an oil and a tyre company). Everything has changed in the last sixty years and driving isn't considered as the sustainable way of getting around in our cities anymore. Major metropolitan regions like New York City has to realize: good public transport networks, subways and connecting surface transportation including streetcars and light rail are vital for easing congestion and getting people out of their cars.
The BQX is planned to be a 16-mile long new streetcar line from Brooklyn to Queens, connecting residential areas and new development zones with local hubs and with the subway network.
I'm honored to be invited to this event as the only European expert and I will talk about the benefits of streetcars and our success with recent projects in Budapest. I'm interested in the discussion and I expect that both support and criticism are present around the project, as it is the case with every major transit investment. Many people support better public transportation and shorter journey times and I can imagine that more than 60 years after the last streetcar ran on the streets of New York City, many people are understandably skeptical. And I am sure that the discussion on removing lanes and on-street parking for a new streetcar line is in the centre of criticism - as it was always in Budapest, even when it was clearly the interest of the majority of locals to make this shift. I am aware that infrastructure projects resulting in gentrification and rising rents are central issues in major U.S. cities.
This will be an exciting night and an interesting discussion - I hope some of you reading this in NYC can join us.

In Brooklyn si Queens, nu prea e loc.
_________________ https://www.bitchute.com/channel/dac_dynasty/ |
